The Food Program
Project: Food Program for the Students
Completed: Included in tuition for students at BHA Ongoing for students at Enkare Ngiro School Many rural children in Kenya exist on one small meal of beans or rice each day. When members of the Building Hope Society visited Kenya, it was revealed that many school children left home at 6:30 in the morning after a light meal, walked 2 hours to school, attended school all day, and made the return walk home at 6:30 in the evening having had no food or water during the day. Enkare Ngiro School is a government school and does not provide food. Many of the students at this school come from homes where very little food is the norm. Clearly, the need for some regular nutrition was noted and several food programs were established.
Students began to receive a small meal on some of their school days. Regular funding for this program is still an urgent requirement. At Building Hope Academy, the students have fresh water and also receive two nutritious meals each day. This alone provides incentive for the parents to bring the children to school. They simply cannot provide this at home. The regular food is having a very positive effect on the students ability to learn. This is made possible through the sponsorship of the children at the school and through donations. A garden has been planted at the school which provides students and teachers with fresh produce. |
